My Search For the Perfect Watch Collection

Share

As I have been researching and looking for my favorite watches and styles I have decided to come up with my personal “Most Wanted Watch List”. This list I hope others will find valuable as you seek to build your family collection.  The watches in this list are the watches I hope to acquire in the near future, dependent on my wife’s will.

There are several styles or types that are essential for every watch collection. However, the collectors preference is relative. The following are the must have styles for every collection. In no particular order the watches you need are a: vintage watch, complication watch,  formal (dress) watch, dive watch or sports watch and your everyday watch.

Dress Watch of Formal Watch

I am having a tough time finding the perfect dress watch. The watch I am looking for has a PIAGET EMPERADOR AUTOMATICblack alligator leather band, a rectangular case and a white or silver dial. The watch dial or face needs to be very plain if possible. As a secondary dress watch I want a similar watch with a brown alligator strap and gold on the case or dial. Ones such watch is the Piaget Emperador Automatic. The amount I want to spend on this time peice is between $2000-$5000.  With that budget in mind the Piaget won’t work because it starts at $8000 and goes up from there.

The Almighty Sports Watch

Breitling Avenger Seawolf Chrono Men's Watch M7339010/BA03
Breitling Avenger Skyland "All Black" Steel

The Sports Watch can generally be the watch for everyday occasions or what I like to call the “Work Watch”. This watch can be worn almost anywhere but is perfect for a casual day around the office.

Since I began to looking into watches I have had my heart set on a Breitling. However, upon further learning about Breitling more interest in them from a luxury and status perspective has waned. My fascination for Breitling continues from my first love. This model has been discontinued and is hard to find especially at a discounted price. But is still fairly reasonable at around $5000.

My Everyday Watch

IWC Portofino ref. IW510103
IWC PORTOFINO
IWC Portofino ref. IW510102
IWC Portofino ref. IW510104

My desired everyday watch is the IWC Portofino. The problem with this choice is I don’t know which one I prefer; Silver case with a charcoal black dial, Silver case with a white dial or Gold case with black dial? IWC makes some gorgeous watches, and the Portofino is one of my Favorites. The IWC also doesn’t come with a small price tag. The gold Portofino runs around $16,000 and the silver Portofino with the black dial ranges from $9k-10K and lastly the Portofino with the white dial ranges from $8-10K. Seems like I have some serious choices on my hands.

The Complication Watch

The complication watch is a tricky choice because of all of the different elements that are involved. Complication watches can also be extremely expensive. I have not currently found a complication watch that fits my needs.

The Classic Vintage Watch

There is one watch I beleive that should be on everymans wrist or at least in everymans collection. That watch is the Omega Speedmaster Professional or otherwise know as the “Moon Watch”. The Speedmaster was the first watch on the moon, it adorned the wrist of Buzz Aldren.

What is a Quartz Watch?

Share

What is a Quartz Watch?

A quartz watch is powered by a  quartz crystal, generally quartz watches are powered by batteries.

How does a Quartz Watch Work?

A battery supplies electricity to a circuit board, which in-turn powers the oscillating quartz crystal. As the electricity powers the crystal, the crystal creates high frequency vibrations. These vibrations cause transistors on the circuit board to produce one impulse per second. The impulses power the motor, the motor is geared to the train. The train controls the movement of the watch hands and other features of the watch.

What are some of the most popular Quartz Watches?

  • Rolex – A Rolex… really? The answer is yes the Rolex OysterQuartz Datejust to be exact. This watch is so popular because Rolex quit making them in 2002, this makes the watch highly collectible.
  • Casio and Seiko both Japanese watch companies make some of the most common quartz watches.

Is there such thing as a Luxury Quartz Watch?

This is a complicated question the answers is: yes and no. Not many people would spend the kind of money on a luxury watch if it was quartz. Part of what makes a luxury watch is the refined mechanical movement that identifies them as a luxury time piece. One the second hand there are a few luxury watches that are quarts powered like the Rolex stated above and some big brand watches like Tag, Omega and Breitling. However, if you are looking for true luxury a quartz watch is probably not what you are looking for in these brands.
